This fund has been set up in memory of the late Dr Fiona Dolan, formerly specialist registrar in Ophthalmology, Glasgow. Fiona died of a brain tumour in December 2007. In response to the suggestions of her colleagues and the support of family and friends, a fund has been set up to channel donations into a cause close to Fiona’s heart.
Fiona was always interested in using her medical skills to help people in developing countries. Before training as a doctor she spent a summer working in a Mother Theresa hospital in Bombay, an experience which she found rewarding and inspiring and she spent time working in South Africa during her training. She often talked about using her Ophthalmology skills to do cataract or trachoma work in a developing country. Having 4 children with her husband, Steven Hay, put this ambition on hold but in the weeks before she was diagnosed with a brain tumour Fiona was in fact planning to go out to work on a cataract camp in Africa. Funding Ophthalmology colleagues to do more of these camps is very much in line with Fiona's wishes.
